Plein Air
Theory Of American Impressionism
Impressionism is ‘The Theory or Method of suggesting an effect or impression without elaboration of the details.’ It was a 19th century art movement that began in France. A new way of Painting Landscape and scenes of everyday life developed in France by Monet and others from early 1860s. Impressionist paintings have visible brush strokes, open composition, emphasis on Light, realist views and bright colors. It is said that the name of the movement is derived from the title of a Claude Monet work, Impression, Sunrise (Impression, soleil levant). Impressionism was introduced to American Artist in the 1880’s through exhibitions of the French Impressionist in Boston and New York. Theodore Robinson was one of the first American artists to paint in an Impressionist Style. American Impressionism flourished from 1890’s through 1910s in art colonies, a place where creative people lived and interacted with one another. Post the 1910’s impressionism had fizzled however was reborn in 1950’s a quarter of a century after the death of Monet.
Some of the prominent American Impressionist painters are J. Ottis Adams, Lucy Bacon, John Noble Barlow, Charles W. Bartlett, Marilyn Bendell, Frank Weston Benson, Johann Berthelsen, John Elwood Bundy, Dennis Miller Bunker, Mary Cassatt and William Merritt Chase. American artists preferred the scenery of Hudson, unpolluted lakes, streams and landscapes but the Civil War changed everything for these artists. With all the changes American Impressionism found a new version and therefore painters found they were free of obligation and started experimenting. Mary cassatt and William Metcalf were the first exposed to the art when they were studying in Europe.
A few characteristics of American Impressionism are asymmetrical balance, use of colored shadows, use of pure color, broken color or broken brushstrokes, use of thick paint, subject matter, high horizontal lines, photographic influence, influence of Japanese prints and painted “En Plein Air” a French term that means outdoors. Painting in the open air is still a popular method among American Impressionists.

The new Maserati GranCabrio makes its debut at Frankfurt: previews and the configurator now online
The Maserati GranCabrio will make its world premiere at the Frankfurt International Motorshow on 15 September. The car is the first four seater cabriolet to be produced by the Modenese company. The GranCabrio is Maserati through and through, from the distinctive Pininfarina styling, the roomy interior and hand-crafted detailing to the driving pleasure and performance it provides.
The Maserati GranCabrio will be available from winter onwards and will be shipped to dealerships around the world in spring 2010. In the meantime, you can admire its beauty, elegance, advanced technology and optional extras at the new Maserati GranCabrio configurator. The configurator is the best of its kind on the web thanks to the quality of its images and the freedom allowed in selecting personalisation options.
The new configurator offers the chance to preview in detail the car’s interior, exterior, steering wheel and even detailing like the interior stitching and brake callipers.
The Maserati GranCabrio also has its own dedicated website at: www.maseratigrancabrio.com .
You can also share your passion and swap comments on the new model with other Maseratisti by visiting the Maserati fan page on Facebook.
Now let’s turn to some of the technical aspects of this hi-tech design icon: the Maserati GranCabrio is powered by a 4.7 litre V8 teamed with a super smooth six-speed automatic transmission. In Sport mode, the V8 rewards the driver and passengers by delivering all the power of its 440 bhp as the engine sound hits all the right notes.
The bodywork on the Maserati GranCabrio has been totally re-engineered to ensure excellent structural rigidity. The spot-on weight distribution means excellent handling and superior levels of safety.
Special attention has been paid to the aerodynamics with the car’s flat aluminium undertray: for the first time ever, the aerodynamic figures of the cabriolet version match the coupè.
The automatic bi-zone climate control maintains ideal conditions in the cabin by adjusting both the interior temperature and ventilation by gauging the exterior temperature, the air humidity and the intensity of the sun’s rays.
The close collaboration between Maserati engineers and BOSE technicians has resulted in a BOSE stereo system designed especially for the GranCabrio so the occupants can enjoy music in the open air.
The Maserati GranCabrio comes with Skyhook suspension as standard. The brakes employ high-performance dual cast technology and were developed in association with Brembo.
In line with Maserati’s traditions, the GranCabrio’s hood is crafted in canvas. In just 28 seconds, the driver and passengers can experience the joy of plein air driving, as the hood opens and closes even with the car travelling up to 30 km/h.
