The Old Man In All Of Us

The Old Man in all of us - By Roger W. Breternitz CChtp.

How many of us like change? You work hard to achieve your station in life, to get things going your way, and you seem to have gotten a handle on all of it...you think. Then along comes a new idea, a concept, or a different way of thinking and doing, a different method of getting to what you think is a higher level of achievement than you have ever reached. We're not only talking about sports here, we could be talking about anything or skill that you would like to improve upon. In order to climb to a higher level they say you have to change this or that about what you are now doing, and you have to start over in parts of what you want to improve, and suddenly it all starts to take on a whole new and sometimes "Ugly" picture of what you thought you were just trying to make better. Like the story about the woodsman. He's chopping down trees to build his log cabin, and somebody walks by as says, "Ya know if you got a chainsaw you could cut down a lot more trees, and a lot quicker too". So he goes to town and buys a chainsaw, comes back and gets a quarter of the way through a tree and it quits. Goes back to town to the hardware store asks what's wrong. Store owner says, "You needed to mix the oil with the gas to get it to work properly". He does it, goes back to the woods, cuts half way through the tree, saw quits cutting...back to the store again. Owner says, "You gotta learn something about chainsaws here pardner, it needs sharpening if you expect it to keep cutting, you gotta buy a file sharpener." He buys the file, gets back to the woods, discovers it's the wrong size of file for that particular saw...back to the store, and gets the right file. Now he's ready to do some major cutting. Cuts almost all the way through the tree and runs out of gas. Well, it was dark by then anyway. Next morning you see him swinging his axe!

Does this sound like a situation you may have been in at one time in your life? You see a new idea, concept or way to improve your tennis, you try it, and before long you find yourself on a flaming skateboard flying down hill in to a lake of gasoline...or so it seems.

That's the way it is with the mental control and belief system change necessary to develop the mental skills of rock hard concentration, relaxation under pressure, and the art of LETTING yourself win instead of TRYING to win, when it comes down to the last forehand, volley or winning shot. You have a belief system, that belief system is responsible for you allowing yourself to win or finding a way to lose gracefully.

It seems the older people get the more they resist change, hence the saying, "You can't teach an old dog new tricks". There is an "Old man" in all of us that resists change, and sometimes will resist violently to keep us from making the change or changes necessary to climb to a higher level of proficiency. This is in anything we do and winning more matches is only one of them. Change in our belief system is the most difficult change to make on a deeper level within us. This "Old man" we're talking about here will resist violently because he (or she) likes the comfort of what's already established, likes the known set of problems to be dealt with, and doesn't want any more NEW problems. This Old Man can actually cause you to do worse in order to get you to "Go back" to what you used to do, or what you used to think, in order to preserve the status quo. Then when you actually do worse, you will say, "Ya, I better stick with what I know", and this Old Man can go back to being comfortable in his little world of mediocrity and being anything but number one. Think of it this way. In order to climb higher, sometimes you have to get on a "Taller ladder", which may mean you have to climb DOWN to get off the one you're on.

If there is something you feel you need to change about your life, your way of doing things, first research it thoroughly, ask a credible source for advice. When it comes to mental change approach it with an open mind, remember it's the Old Man who will always keep you from new learning, new concepts, and the quest for expanding your thinking. George Bernard Shaw once said, "A mind once expanded by new thinking, will never return to it's original state". When you set out on the quest to change your belief system to make you a consistent winner, you set in motion a very powerful goal seeking mechanism. Our brain was meant to serve us like a very powerful computer, it will literally do what we tell it. The trick is, HOW we tell it to do our bidding. We program it each and every day with what we say when we talk to ourselves, this programming is then stored in our mental warehouse of information. The Old Man is the guard at the door of this warehouse and the more comfortable he becomes by not having to put new information, and concepts into it, the better he likes it. So when you use mental reprogramming tapes and CDs to restructure you're ideas about yourself as a winner, and you do visualizations picturing yourself reaching your goal, and then claiming the first prize, it is in direct conflict with what this Old Man wants...CHANGE!

He will fight you all of the way, and may even make you take a step backwards to make you THINK what you're doing will not, or is not working. You need to keep listening to your chosen reprogramming source, tape or CD. DO NOT give up, sometimes people tell me that they go for several weeks and nothing is happening, they even got worse. Then in one one day or night, it all came together like finally breaking through the ice you've been trying to chop through on a frozen lake. It was like a bolt of lightning, the change was so overpowering. It was like all the work, training, and perseverance came together at once, and a great block was removed, they climbed to the top of the mountain...and they never looked back.

In your quest to have this breakthrough, remember to fight the Old Man, don't let him win, you have to keep hammering away at him, keep the pressure on. If you start to do worse because of changes you made, if you start to get irritable, it's usually a sign that the Old Man is about to give in. He's giving it one more try to make you give up and go back to being comfortable with the old state of being. It's a sign that you are very close to a break through in your quest for change, and effort to excel to a higher level. If it was easy, we'd all be on television dong a "Tony Robins" thing, or the cover of Entrepreneur magazine So...hang in there, fight the Old Man, and get ready to jump into the winner's circle, because your breakthrough is just around the corner.

The best of luck, and

Keep your eye on the goal,

Roger W. Breternitz

Hocking Hills: Beyond Old Man'’s Cave

Most everyone who has heard of or had the opportunity to explore the hocking hills has heard of Old Man?s Cave. One of the largest and more popular state parks in Ohio, Old Man?s Cave is also one of the most familiar. Home to countless forms of wildlife, breathtaking waterfalls and miles of hiking trails, it is no wonder that this section of the Hocking Hills has retained so much popularity. However, Old Man?s Cave is just one of the six unique and different parks which make up the Hocking Hills. Some of the less explored and less well known areas offer plenty of pleasant surprises to all who decide to explore them.

The Ohio state park at Ash Cave is a spectacular combination of natural beauty and human convenience. The park at Ash Cave is one of the areas in the Hocking Hills which has been updated with asphalt paved trails in some areas and is largely wheelchair accessible. Perhaps the most noticeable feature of Ash Cave is the breathtaking, 100 ft. waterfall at the north end of the trail. Massive in every respect of the word, the waterfall has been seen completely frozen in the winter months -- one of the most beautiful times to visit the Hocking Hills.

Cedar falls is a more secluded section of the Hocking Hills, with its dense cover of Hemlocks and ferns. The long and slender park runs east to west along the stream formed from the beautiful Cedar Falls waterfall. The pool that forms at the base of the falls is the home to snapping turtles and many varieties of fish.

Conkle?s Hollow is one of the more challenging trails to hike in the Hocking Hills. This park has plenty of rugged, rocky cliffs which offer a nice contrast to the serenity of the gentle Hemlocks and soft flowing stream. The trail at Conkle?s Hollow state park in Ohio?s Hocking Hills can be traverse in about an hour and offers any level hiker a great adventure.

Nature lovers who are looking to find wildflowers and experience the full beauty of the Hocking Hills in the fall should check out Cantwell Cliffs. One of the more isolated of the state parks in the Hocking Hills, Cantwell Cliffs is the perfect place for a romantic walk with a loved one. The trails here offer a little challenge and large rewards with unique rock formations and inclines.

Rock House, or Robber?s Roost as it is popularly known, is the park in the Hocking Hills with a trail that proceeds directly through the recessed face of a massive boulder. History thrives at Rock House, from the rumored hideout of seventeenth century bandits to the massive rock formations which were left by glaciers thousands of years ago. This one is a favorite with younger adventure seekers.

The best way to enjoy the natural beauty of all of the parks within the Hocking Hills is to stay in an authentic log cabin. These Hocking Hills cabins are the perfect weekend getaway in Ohio, combining all of the perks and conveniences of a modern lifestyle with the raw and majestic beauty of Ohio's Hocking Hills.
