Why are the hands in ancient sumerian art small in proportion to their bodies?
No one knows - too far in the past. It was just their accepted artistic tradition, I suppose. Kind of like in ancient Egypt - even if a figure was painted in profile, they would paint the one visible eye as a full eye looking at the viewer, rather than realistically painting the eye in profile as well. Theories have been put forth - but they are only theories. Same with ancient Sumerian art.
